VOODOO MACBETH WINS BEST NARRATIVE FEATURE FILM @ DANCESWITHFILMS!

Thank you DancesWithFilms for such an incredible, dizzying, whirlwind of a journey! It was incredible to see so many local friends and family at our LA premiere, let alone for us to win BEST NARRATIVE FEATURE! I am so grateful for the recognition and accolades we are getting: the more we receive, the greater our chances grow of getting distribution and reaching an even wider audience. This story deserves it’s moment in the sun.

I couldn’t believe how much of my family, both chosen and blood, were able to COME! My Aunt Martha and my two cousins Patty and Catherine drove in from Granada Hills with wide smiles. Catherine told my aunt she expected to not follow the story at all, to be stuck in “that’s my cousin!” mode, but she got caught up in the story and forgot she was watching me. Can’t wish for a better review than that.

My fiancé’s sister was able to join us from San Francisco, even my cousin Tommy decided last minute to fly in from Kentucky, which put me on cloud nine. He gave me one of my grandfather’s buckeyes for luck. if you’ve ever eaten a ‘buckeye’ at Christmas, those delicious balls of chocolate with a peanutbutter center, then you’ll recognize the nut their named after. Though Ohio is known as the Buckeye state, Kentucky has the largest population of buckeyes in the US. My grandfather used to keep one in his pocket for luck, so Tommy bringing one from Kentucky for me on an important night had me feeling my grandfather’s hand on my shoulder and weeping. I love Kentucky, my family, my heritage…goes to show what a simple gesture can mean.

And look at the luck it brought already!

I’m gonna keep it close on this journey and all the journeys to come. I know my grandfather would be proud of the work I’m doing. If he were here, he’d just nod his head, say “great job old man” and tell me “you still got soft feet” with a grin as we got to work on the tomato plants. Working in the garden is a great way to come down from surreal moments like these.

It’s thoughts of my grandfather and my garden and my family that ground me, so that I can soar without fear of floating away.

Thoughts as solid and gentle as a buckeye in a pocket.
